Municipal Museum
Muzeum Mesta Bratislavy The Municipal Museum,
the oldest museum in Bratislava as well as in Slovakia, was founded
as early as 1868. Its collections can be seen in one of the ten
permanent exhibitions.
The largest one is the exposition of the city history
in the Old Town Hall, Primacialne namestie 3. Opening hours:
10:00am to 5:00pm Tue-Fri, 11:00am to 6:00pm on weekends.
This exhibition of the Municipal Museum presents exhibits documenting
Bratislava’s rich history, including the history of crafts and
trade, coronations of Hungarian kings, science, technology, cultural
life in the town, sacral arts, life style of nobility, ideas of
national revival as well as development of industry. The torture
chambers in the basement of the Old Town Hall are very popular.
The smaller expositions of the Municipal Museum can be
found all around the city, including Viticulture and Wine Industry
on Radnicna street, Music Exhibition on Klobucnicka street,
Arms and City Fortification on Michalska street, Historical
Clocks and Watches on Zidovska street and Art Handicrafts
on Beblaveho street.

Slovenske Narodne Muzeum Another important institution
is the Slovak National Museum consisting of 16 specialized museums,
such as Natural History Museum at Vajanskeho nabrezie,
Museum of History and Museum of Music at the Bratislava
Castle, and Museum of Jewish Culture on Zidovska street.

Gallery
Slovenska Narodna Galeria Containing over 55,000
works the Slovak National Gallery is the largest gallery in Bratislava,
located in 2 interconnected buildings, Vodne Kasarne (Water
barracks) on Razsusovo nabrezie and Esterhazy Palace
on Sturovo nabrezie. (Esterhazy Palace is undergoing a reconstruction
these days). The permanent exhibitions, 16th - 18th century European
Art, Gothic Art in Slovakia, Baroque Art of Slovakia, 19th century
Art of Slovakia, are completed by collections of paintings, drawings,
jewellery, glass, ceramics, crafts, pictures and design. |
