Safety tips - how not to get cheated

Generally, Bratislava is safer than most major cities in the west. Pick-pocketing, drunken menace, car thefts and “special tourist rate charge” occur incidentally, just like in any other European capital.

Here are a few safety tips:
  • Carry your valuable well out of reach. Thieves usually take advantage of crowded buses, shops and groups of tourists.
  • Do not talk back to a group of drunken young men (thay might as well be British guys on the Stag party) trying to get into a fight.
  • Avoid the dark places, such as city parks in the night (especially if you are a woman).
  • Always lock your car and never leave valuables on the seats. It is recommended to use guarded parking.
  • Do not exchange your money with the people on the street (usually standing nearby an exchange office) offering “a great deal”, or you might get cheated.
  • Always check your bill in the restaurant or pub for the items that got take “by mistake”.
  • Do not flag a cab/taxi down in the street or you might get overcharged. It is recommended to call ahead. Profi taxis reachable at 245 246 715 are considered to be reliable and cheap.
